DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY ART AND SCIENCE

The Department of Military Art and Science is responsible for conduct of the Bachelors in Military Art and Science (BMAS) undergraduate degree programme. BMAS is a military specific UG programme being conducted under the aegis of NUST by the MAS Department of the NUST Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (NIPCONS).

Scheme and Conduct of Studies

The minimum number of credit hours and duration for completing the Bachelor of Military Art and Science UG programme is as under:

No of Semesters: 8

Minimum Duration: 4 years

Maximum Duration: 7 years

The BMAS degree programme commenced in May 2010. It is a multi-campus programme, being conducted at the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul; School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta and Human Resource Development Centres (HRDCs) at Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Malir and Quetta.

To plan, coordinate and execute undergraduate degree programme in Military Art and Science for Army cadets / YOs ensuring that these graduates radiate self-confidence and are equipped with high standards of communication skills (written/verbal), innovative abilities, rational thinking and analytical ability, in keeping with the standards of NUST.

The MAS Department is headed by a Head of Department, supported with a ‘core faculty’ at NIPCONS campus Rawalpindi. A qualified faculty has been enrolled at the HRDCs for providing quality education to the students attending the 7th and 8th semesters.

The BMAS programme is being conducted utilising the latest IT support. An almost paperless environment has been created. All tests are being conducted simultaneously on-line at all centres; while central lectures are transmitted via Video Link.

NUST Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (NIPCONS) with its Department of Military Art and Science was established in Dec 2009 to conduct the four years Undergraduate education of the Pakistan Army officers. Bachelor of Military Art and Science (BMAS) degree; a Higher Education Commission (HEC) recognised programme, has an average yearly enrolment of over 1000 students. As stipulated by HEC rules; BMAS degree encompasses 130 Credit Hours of studies, spread over 8 x semesters and is conducted in a multi-campus environment. This was a totally new and unique educational programme; since never before had a multi-campus degree programme been implemented in the Army. Besides working out the conduct methodologies, detailed syllabus and study material for the students as well as for the teaching faculty had to be specially formulated. The associated institutions, support organisations and the faculty proved fully up to the task and BMAS studies commenced in May 2010. Subsequently, the 1st convocation was successfully held on 4 Sep 2014 which was presided over by the COAS General Raheel Shareef, NI(M). The major objective of the undergraduate programme (Bachelor of Military Art & Science) is to educate the future military leaders in the art and science of warfare while developing a sound knowledge base for further professional development. While maintaining a high academic standard, second to none, the degree programme offers a broad-based academic curriculum to widen the mental horizon of young leaders of the Army and deepen their know how in social sciences, besides professional subjects. The course while focusing on building the capacity of students to absorb the essentials of professional education is also designed to laying a firm academic foundation for higher studies. A NUST undergraduate degree opens multiple educational possibilities for the future for its graduates. While the overall performance of the students has been highly encouraging, however, along the road, some challenges were also faced. The evolving security environment and Army’s operational / employment requirements necessitated certain changes. We took due cognisance of the Army’s requirements and seamlessly incorporated these, ensuring that the aims and objectives of the programme were never compromised. As we continue to move forward, I am confident that In’shaAllah the BMAS programme will grow from strength to strength. I am confident that our alumni will prove themselves as officers of sterling qualities of head and heart, dedicated to the service of the motherland.
